This may not be new ground for most veteran members, but if you are new to the site, you will probably find this information very helpful.
I first started blogging back in 2004 on another website, although it was not for business at all. Rather, it was just an assortment of personal stories and opinions. I guess not all that much has changed since then - I still write plenty of personal posts here on ActiveRain. I rarely wrote anything over there, but I have made a habit/hobby out of writing since joining AR.
JUST TO CLARIFY...
BLOG vs. POST - The term "blog" is actually short for "web log", since blogs were originally intended to serve as a type of online diary. I have seen a lot of new AR members mentioning that they read my "blogs" when they really mean that they read the posts on my blog. I have almost 600 posts on this blog. I only maintain two blogs. See how that works?
POST vs. COMMENT - So, a "post" is an article of sorts; it's an entry appearing on my blog. A post and a comment are different. Almost daily, I see someone say, "You have a lot of posts on this blog." Well, yes, but what they mean to say is, "You have a lot of comments on this post."
"HOW DO I GET POINTS?"
You get 200 points per post, with a limit of 10 getting the automatic points each week (25 extra points per post if you select an "ActiveRain Channel"). The week ends at 11:59pm Central time Saturday night, and a new week begins at midnight. Extra points come with getting featured on the main dashboard, and/or getting comments on your post. There is no hard and fast rule for the maximum number of points per post, but I think it caps at around 750-800 or so. I have one that exceeded this, but perhaps it was an anomaly.
If you write more than 10 posts during the ActiveRain-defined week, you will not get the base points, but you will still get points for comments or getting featured. No extra points are issued for getting featured in the network groups - those simply give your post more exposure.
You receive points for comments of at least 10 words (or thereabouts) that you leave on someone else's post(s). Comments receive 25 points each, and you are limited to 10 comments each day that will receive points. After the first 10, you can still leave an unlimited number of comments daily, but not for points.
"HOW DO I GET FEATURED?"
Usually, the featured posts are those that are well-written, and those that stimulate discussion, provide valuable real estate tips, interesting real estate experiences, AR tips and tricks, SEO information, etc. If you want to learn how to gain a big following, I would encourage you to spend time perusing the featured posts each day (there are currently 13 at a time that are displayed on the main ActiveRain.com page, and you can see the older ones by clicking the "More Featured Posts" link at the bottom of that page).
Often, the featured dashboard will include information on changes taking place around here, or new features that are being launched, such as the recent re-design of Localism, which is ActiveRain's sister site for consumer-related content.
If you see a post that you think should be featured, you can click the red flag icon at the bottom of the post and check the "Featured" box. This will alert the AR staff, and they can consider it for inclusion on the main dashboard.
"WHERE DO I FIND MORE HELP?"

At the bottom of EVERY AR page, there is a link that says "HELP/FAQ", which will take you to a bunch of helpful tutorial posts (currently just over 100) written by ActiveRain staff and veteran members including me, Brad Andersohn, Jeff Turner, Rich Jacobson, Bob Stewart, Brad Carroll, and more. It is a wealth of information, believe me. Most of the more frequently asked questions have answers within this group.
Additionally, you will see a link at the bottom right of every page that says "CONTACT ACTIVERAIN". This will enable you to create a ticket for an AR staff member to assist you if you have questions or technical issues.
Lastly, you will find that most members who have been around here for any length of time don't mind helping to answer your questions. This is a kind and caring community for the most part. All of us were new here at some point, and the functions and features of the site are numerous and a bit overwhelming at first.

Jason: Once again a great post from one of Active Rain's best bloggers. Thanks so much for sharing your wealth of information with both the Newbies and the Oldbies. :)
You know I guess I had never thought about the difference between a blog and a post. I use the two interchangeably. I wrote a blog, I wrote a post. I think of them more as posts but did not get the fine points. Will use the right terms now. I am not a newbie either.
KAREN ANNE - It's great to see you, my night owl friend. I hope you're doing well. I miss hanging out with you into the wee hours like we used to. How is the stadium coming along?
STEVEN - I'm glad this was helpful for you as a non-newbie. I think there are a lot of folks who use the terms interchangeably. Technically, a blog is a collection of posts, but most people wouldn't bother to correct anyone for calling a post a blog.
Jason - I never really knew the difference between a blog and a post. I always thought you post a blog. You didn't write this because your tired if me using the wrong term at the wrong time are you.
Just kidding! Great post Jason, jambed full of information where were you when I first started blogging Thanks!
ROBERT - It is a VERY common mixup for newbies (and some veteran members, too). I hear them used interchangeably ALL THE TIME. I'm glad you found it helpful!
Well aren't you just Mr. Know-It-All tonight?
Seriously, great post my friend. This is full of useful information and should be required reading when new Rainers sign up for an account!
These are all great resources Jason...
Thanks for sharing with us - I love all that you write and always learn from it! Great job!
Thank you sir! Just what I needed. (again)
Jason, Thank you once again sir for all of the help. You are always so willing to help and it is much appreciated.
Jason: This is a great post for an "oldie" like me too. I guess I'm considered an "oldie" now although I still feel like a "newbie" in many ways.
Thanks for the tutorials, Jason. There are a couple of things I haven't gotten into yet.
Nice summary Jason. Thanks for informing me of why I am receiving 225 points for my posts. Was wondering why that was.
Jason, very good post. It covers many of the questions I see new people asking. I bookmarked it for future reference. You do a nice job in formatting everything so it looks and reads well.
Jason...
Whoo-hoo, a great post but I must disagree with you. This isn't just helpful for newbies, it is good information for the entire community.
A nice one-stop explanation of how things work around here, and an automatic feature in my opinion! Extremely well done!
Good Morning Jason, its a great Blogging on AR 101 post, thanks. I have bookmarked it so I can read those articles at my leisure and reference them occasionally.
Thanks for the scoop on Active Rain. I am semi new, and did not realize some of those pointers.
Great recap Jason for newbies and veterans alike to the Rain. I like your links from tutorials you wrote in the past.
Jason, Thank you for the information and the tips. I am a new active rain mamber and this information is a lot of help.
Aha! Thank you for clarifying a few things for me.
Thanks for the education. I needed to be reminded of what I already have learned.
I flagged you for a feature!
J...huge stuff here. I know this stuff, but it took me so long to figure this stuff out. This should be the "Welcome to AR, here's how you score" Blog.....er....post. Nice.
Ther'es a reason I read all your blogs posts. I have bookmarked this one to share with newbs I come in contact with.
Jason, this is great advice. Most of it common sense and the rest very informative specifics to AR. There were a few things that even I did not know (not that I know everything!, I don't, I can assure you)
Thanks
Bo
Thank you for this post, Jason. I was wondering when the AR week ends.
As always, Jason, you provide a wealth of information. Some of your anwers were to questions I never thought to ask. Keep it up and you might just make a blogger out of me yet. Many thanks!
Jason, as usual you are a wealth of information and I love the advice that you give. I am bookmarking this post as a reminder. I learned the hard way about when the week ended and began. Thanks for the information on the "channel" though - that was new to me. Have a great week! ~Anne Marie
So, what is localism? And btw, it is scary how we think alike!
Jason,
As always thanks for these tutorials and small lessons. Every little tid bit of knowledge learned here helps.
Jason it is refreshing for me to go over the fundamentals of blogging. I feel there is much to gain and little to loose.
BTW Jason, when I started here, the tips from you, Brad & Rich is what really helped me figure out what the heck I was doing online!
Jason - I really appreciate your helpfulness. Thanks for the list of tutorial posts that you have written. I'm going to bookmark this post... :)
Jason,
I bookmarked this! I have to go and show five foreclosures but when I get back I'm reading every line. You are very helpful. My buddy Karen Monsour will be glad you wrote this! I am driving her crazy with all my questions on how to do things on Active Rain. Thanks a Million.
Thank you. I am so glad that you and other members here regularly update posts on how to help ALL of us figure out all of the new fangled gadgets and also great ideas on how to blog and post efficiently and with results!
Thanks for the tips. I found them helpful considering I'm a newbie. I know it will help me with my points.
Jason, Thanks for useful info! I wondered why I was getting 225 points all of a sudden:) This proves I should start reading when there are changes! Luckily, there are great members like you to keep the rest of us headed in the right direction.
All right I got the blog vs post Jason. Thanks for the info. You are such a doll, a stickler for details, but a doll non the less <G>.
Jason great points, sometimes even after being here a while, we don't know all the little details.
All the best,
Jason - I just got back from 3 days in the Pacific Rim Real Estate Conference & Expo in Waikoloa, Hawaii, where the theme was "All Together Ride the Wave to Success", where the idea was to bring key players in the real estate industry together. I was registered as a Mortgage Banker and 1 of the sessions I attended was Bob Stewart's "The Power of Blogging". Now when asked if I am a member of Active Rain, vs. just having a profile on Active Rain, I will be able to say that I am actually "active", thanks to your help. Mahalo... (means Thank You in Hawaii)
Hi Jason, thanks for that simple breakdown & the resourse links. Sometimes we forget that things we are so used to, others have no idea about (I didn't know what "flagging" a post was until about 3 months into being here... I thought is was someting bad!). This is a great post for new bloggers.
Jason - Always good to get a refresher on this stuff if you don't come in here as often as other bloggers. If you don't use it you can forget it like anything else on a computer. Thanks for reminding us about this stuff. Bob H
Thank you for this helpful article. I'm just getting started with Active Rain, and this is a good summary!
Great Post, I'm a Newbie, One of the first questions I ask was what was the difference between a Post and a Blog, I have bookmarked This post with all your Great information. Thank you, Barbara In Ky

Jason, it looks like you covered everything to help new AR members get a good idea of how things work around here.
I have so much to learn. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Jason, thanks this is a helpful post. I think of myself as a newbie but it's scary how much of this I do know. Still learning though.
Are you sure you don't work for AR? Thank you, I always read your POSTS! And I appreciate the useful info!
Jason,
Thanks for clarifying the whole thing from posts to comments to the mysterious points gig. I'm not as confused as I was which for me is saying a lot! I've bookmarked this as well, though I've bookmarked so much lately I have a library.
Thanks for the information - I didn't know that the week ended at a particular point - I thought is was a rolling 7 day period.
Jason- thanks so much for the timely post. You are a gem
Concise and clear for both newbies and Veterans. You got your point across = Good web log post. All the best -
Jason ... as always you give us awesome stuff! pippa
STEVE - Pretty much. :) I was thinking about telling newbies about the post whenever it is appropriate. Thanks for your encouraging words!
JESSE - Thanks, buddy! Any more "good stuff" on the way to Austin?
Hey Jason you can get more than 650 points on a post. HMMM.... is it possible I may have beaten the AR blogging king for points on one of my posts - LOL
Those definitions cannot be put out enough. I've given up on correcting people about it, hopefully they will find their way here and start using the nomenclature correctly.
YUPPERS...THIS is HOW you get FEATURED!! Just like that. You are the best, hermano! GBU!
Hi Jason: Thanks... Really need this after 100+ posts. I just jumped in and did it and now I am back checking on Newbie posts, what a lot to learn!
Thanks Jason!! You gave some great tips and information that I did not know!
Always great to review these tips and you write about them so well.
Great explanation. Thanks for sharing.
Jason: You are so generous with your time and knowledge. Reminders are always valuable. Thank you for taking the time to post this to your blog.
As usual very good tips for all to use with terrific links to expand upon.
Jason,
Aloha & thank you so much for the clarification! This is great information for people like me who are new to this online communities phenomenon... Great post!
Thank you so much for the post, puts a lot of information we sort of know in a great context. Much appreciated
Thanks for the great post...Ken Oh I better make it ten words if I want points..lol
I'm definately a newbie, and since I'm a real estate "sidekick," I dont' post as often as I should. I appreciate the information.
Thanks Jason.
Wow Jason, You've done it again. You've put into simple words what I need to know. I'm a newbie here, 12 days and counting and I always learn something new. Thank you so much!
All of the newbies should be sending you a thank you note. Here's my thanks.
Jason- Great post for newbies who are yearning to know the answers to these questions. I know I had them when I first joined! Congrats on your gold star!
Great post for the newbies who are overlooked on occassion. We have so many new members and they all are at a loss to get started - especially the ones I've invited. I've found that if I don't get them "rolling" they never get rolling on the network.
Great Post Jason. I didnt even know about the points for the "Active Rain Channel". Thanks again....
Great information...thanks for sharing. I also wasn't really clear between a post and a blog. Thanks for clearing it up.
I just love posts like this that include links to other relevant posts! Great for us newbies! Thanks for putting this together.
Some tips from the man, the myth the legend... Jason Crouch! Thanks for the info. You should add that it's relevant for anyone with less than 300,000 points! :)
This is good advice Jason. I guess I did not know everything!
Good things I am learning, I do appreciate it.
thank you

Gosh! When will I EVER get a grip on this! thank you Jason for clarifying. So, I know this is a comment to your blog that you posted? Still confused. Maybe I should re-read the whole "thing"! You sure know your stuff though and thank you for sharing.
This is a very helpful post for new members. I will forward this link to a few members that have been trying to get started.
Blogging 101 - I love it.
I even picked up a few tips. I didn't realize you could get so many points for one great blog post. I also hadn't figured out when the new week began.
Thanks,
Jason ... thanks for this excellent AR post and article. I am busy these days, with my wife and family, real estate work, clients, church, and others ... but always look forward to reading good blog articles that help me understand better about what's going on in the blog world. Best wishes. Harrison
Thanks for the clarification of the basics and the links to your other tutorials.
Jason,
Thanks for the post. It was well written and very clear for us newbies.
Jason,
Can you clarify the "25 extra points for Active Rain Channels?" Not sure if I understand that.
Appreciate the post as I never really understod all that went to the points. I find I am more of a competitive person than I knew when I sarted to rise to the top of our area. The closer I get the more I want to imput.
Thank you Jason. This info is great for everyone, not just newbies :)
Thanks Jason. This is exactly what I needed to know about how the point system works.
A terrific explanation and so helpful ! I am bookmarking it so I can share it with others especially those I refer to AR. Thank you!
Jason -- this is a great recap of the basics on Active Rain. I think we have a great community here. I am sure this information will be very helpful to everyone.
DIANE - When you are about to post an entry to your blog, there is a box marked "ActiveRain Channels". If you select this box, then select a specific channel for the post, you will receive 25 extra points for each post, on top of the 200.
HI JASON!
Thanks for including compilation of your greatest hits. I'm going to take some time to go through each one as I know they are exploding with good info!!
Thanks for the information. I always have alot to work on.
Thanks Jason,
I am fairly new and always looking for advice from the veterans. I think this is the second time I have read one of your "posts" and it's evident that you know what your talking about.

Fantastic information...I am glad you posted some of your old links as I was just thinking I needed some help with pictures and now I have a quick and easy resource. Thanks.
Add this to the 100 comment list :)
Jason- as usual your are stock full of valuable information that I truly appreciate as "blogging" was just something I heard about on FoxNews until just recently. I actually happened onto active rain when I was searching for a local CE class and got an email from someone with their AR link on it. I'm sure glad I found it because it's been a wonderful resource and I've met some awesome people. ... Don't let your head swell up... just because you are one of those awesome people.
(JK)
I have seen a particular member get over 1,000 points a day for posting 5 posts on her blog. I asked AR about this, but they must be swamped. I have at least two or three questions in and have been in for weeks and no response from them.
I do not think there is a limit to how many points you can get in a day/week from writing posts.
This was a very helpful, well written blog. I mean post, or do I mean blog ;) Very helpful tips, I really appreciate it. Thanks!!!!
CINDY - Actually, what you described is not against any rules here. You can write TEN posts in one day and get over 2,250 points if you want to, but you will only get the "automatic" 200 points on the first ten each week. After that, any posts written may receive points, too, but not the basic 200, only anything that would have been over that amount. In other words, if you write 12 posts one week, the last two will be limited to the overage amount - if #11 would have received 350 points normally, it gets 150 instead.
I realize that you think there is no limit, but I have crossed the 10 post mark a handful of times, and there were no base points awarded to me. In theory, someone could write 10 posts on Saturday, and 10 more on Sunday, and get points for all of them, since the AR week ends late Saturday night. In this case, they would have to wait until the following Sunday to write any more for points.
With regard to not getting a response, I would recommend contacting Rich, Bob, or Brad with any other questions you might have, unless it's something that I can answer for you, and I would be happy to do so.
Thanks. I have learn alot from you. Great post. Points Points Points!!!
Although I knew most of the information in this post, I did find it interesting as to how you get featured...I was wondering about that. I'm still pretty new to AR and just recently have really starting working on blogging regularly. Thanks for putting this information out there.

Great info. I hadn't seen your Google Juicer post before.
Jason, great tips. I didn't know all of these...thanks for sharing. ;-)
Jason,
As you can see from the number of comments, your tips are a hit with everyone. Thank you for sharing with us your expertise.
Wow thanks for all the great information. We can always learn more.... Thanks for the tips and the information....
Hello Jason. Thanks for the post. Great information. Thanks for sharing.
You seem to really know what is going on here. Every time I am searching trying to figure something out, I come across a blog of yours. Do you have a blog that explains the "my ads" section and if that is to generate traffic or if it helps with google and links? Thanks!
Rob - As I understand it, the ads are those that you see displayed around the site, and you pay by the number of impressions/views. I haven't checked the prices in awhile. I don't think it would help with Google or with links, unless you leave them up for a long time and they get indexed. Just my two cents -
Hi Jason,
Thanks for all the helpful information. You have already taught me how to add pictures and videos for this newbie! Maybe we will run into each other soon. Again, thanks! - Debbie
Jason - thanks - you must have excelled in sharing in pre school - you really give us a lot of ideas, info, and just plain ole' fun reading.
This is so helpful. I am a newbie, and I have been reading posts on ActiveRain for a couple of weeks, but have never posted or started my own blog. Thanks for the info!

Good stuff, thanks for the recap. I guess the guy above me doesn't know the rules about adding links in comments - you might point that out for us will ya? How about whack him with the delete key?
LYN - The guy that WAS above you is now gone, thanks to the "Report as Spam" link, which deletes and reports him.
Thank you for this information and adding other links to your tutoral posts. I am fairly new to AR by a couple of months and have not had a chance yet to really get into finding out how all this works. Looking forward to all your information.
It took a month for this to show up in the Featured Blog email, but you did it!
Thanks for the reminders. I didn't know about the red flag!
Thanks for the clarification, Jason. I'm a newbie and really appreciate all the knowledge that is freely given by veterans like you. Or maybe you just get frustrated with us newbies mucking everything up. ; )
BEN - I missed it somehow. Was it in the newsletter for AR?
PAM - Maybe a bit of each?
OK. So, I need to go through all your posts apparently as you have some MAJORLY beneficial content.
Thanks.
Thanks for the primer. i found it very helpful. It was concise and well written.
This was so helpful I had to bookmark it. I'm going to re-blog it to my blog site "You Blog" which has yet to really get off the ground, but I'm hoping we will get the right kind of people with interesting things to say. Thanks again for the info, you have helped a lot people.

How do I get featured on the Parksville Real Estate News and Questions page?
Thank you for the tips on getting a blog featured ... just what I was looking for.
Yours is a helpful post. Active Rain has so much to it that it takes awhile to learn how to use it. Thanks! Peter
Thank you for sharing! I am a newbie to the real estate business, to active rain and to the world of blogs, posts, and comments. :)
I've now invited my whole brokerage to AR, and the first folks are already signing up. I see five signups already! I'm already an AR point fiend - I'm jonesing for any additional points I can find.
Which reminds me I have one more pretty basic question. I have already linked to AR from my website. How do I "apply" for the Link to AR point category?
Thanks - I'm off to figure out how to start my AR blog!
Greg
Greg - If you used one of these links, you should eventually receive the points, but it takes some time:

Thanks so much for the great info. I am impressed with all the well written articles you have listed. I have much to learn about this and how one goes about doing this.

Thanks, for great info but i'm on information overload.I'll be watching for you in the future.
Hi, Jason, thanks for the clarification. I'm VERY NEW to the whole posting thing and don't even get me started on Blogging. I really enjoy your "lessons" and I am looking forward to being more involved in posting, blogging and commenting on ActiveRain and beyond.
Great recap Jason, you are always a wealth of information. Do you make house calls?
my blogs/post and are need of a revamping
This was amazing. Too confusing to keep track of, but then, I don't care about points...I DO care about features, so that part I read really well and have that as my goal.
Thanks for being you.

I'm thankful for so many helpful tutorials on here. It certainly makes my process easier. Right now I'm trying to find a voice and just create good content.
That was some very helpful info, and even through I have been on active rain awhile I still don't feel like I know all of its ins and outs. Thanks!

I am a newbie, as well. Thanks for the info - good stuff !!
Nice work Jason I did learn a few things and appreciate the knowledge on the basics of Activerain.
As a newbee, I found your post very helpfull. There we tips on there that I will certainly be implementing going forward. Thank you for sharing.
Great information for a newbie. It's good to know how one can begin to move up the ranks. Thanks.

Jason, I was all set to do a post on my blog about the same thing----now all I have to do is leave a comment on the post on your blog:)
Keep those power seller tips coming. I know that people need this stuff.
All the information is good, but, you failed to mention what the Points are for.. Do they get you a cheezeburger or something?
More great tips and suggestions. The past two years have been an up hill climb. But we are still here while others have gone.
Jason, from one Austinite to another... much thanks for all the great links and information. The only thing I'm upset about is not joining AR earlier. I was blogging within a different platform and wasn't getting much out of it. Now everything is looking much brighter and I'm not minding the time spent blogging.
Thank you so much for the valuable information. I had no idea there was a difference between a blog and a post. So much to learn!

Greetings Jason,
I just subscribed to your blog. WOW - what interesting reading. I have learned a lot from you and I want to continue to learn. I am going to click on another post now.
Happy Memorial Day and BE SAFE.
Sincerely,
Sandra J Steele
Can you help me?
Everytime I go to my blog page it shows someone else's blog.
I did re blog it but why doesn't it move down? How do I get rid of it?
Joanne - Can you just delete it?
Any suggestions on, what I think, is an issue that I am having?
I just posted twice:
The afternoon and evening after I posted, each of these appeared on the first page of Google (and they were even in the top 1 - 3 links). However, after a day or two, they've disappeared from Google.
Would you have any idea as to why?
Thank you so much for your time.
Thx for the great tips. I've been trying to find a page like this, and I'm looking forward to reading some of you other posts (may need to do a bit each weekend). I'm pretty new here - joined in Feb, just re-engaging now. I just started following you on Twitter, too.
I still have several more q's, but I have a hunch a bunch of them are answered in your other posts and/or the FAQ section.
Thanks for the great info. I am curious why some comments have pictures and some don't. I will check your other posts.
Great tips! It gives a newbie (like myself) a great starting point. Thanks!
Really great tips...but I still want to know know why I need points???
Thanks for the tips. So much to learn.
So on my comments, why doesn't my picture show up? Only a few of us here....
Christy - It's because you haven't accumulated enough points yet. I think it starts after you hit 5,000 or 10,000 (not sure which). This was added over the past year or so.
As always, a great post, Jason. Did you do a post on incorporating widgets? How about how to design your blog page? I need a revamp.
Great info for us all, I've been away from Activerain for a few months and your tips were incredible helpful!
Thanks for the tips. I am trying to build up my points on my ActiveRain account. Anything helps.
Thank you for the additional info. It's helpful to see it on one page that can be read quickly.
Thanks for the clarification of the point structure and how it is done.
I think I'd better review a few of those posts, thanks.
Jason: Getting the vocabulary right will help us all look like we know what we are doing. Thanks to Mona for reblogging this post, whcih I had missed.
