Localism - The Next Steps

The Land Rush is over now!  There were over 3600 neighborhoods deeded out to members all over the US this week.  There are still some left, and more to be created.  Here are the "next steps" with Localism.

The most important thing to remember is that you'll always need to log-in to Localism first.  Just because you are logged into ActiveRain and can push posts to Localism, you'll still have to log-in to do ALL the following steps.  You'll need to click on one of the featured communities at Localism.com to get to your log-in screen.  (Here's a shortcut, just click on the Banner)

1. Step ONE: How to Setup a Neighborhood

Whether you sponsored a community or not, you can still create neighborhoods.  There are two ways to do this.  Go to the "Sponsor A Community" link at the top of the page.  Use the pull-down menus to Click on your State, County, and City, then on the far right side of the page, enter the community and submit query. It will show your community pending until approved. It takes under 2 minutes for this entire process.

The second way to setup a neighborhood is on ActiveRain.  You can log-in, go to create a new Blog post, scroll down to the bottom of your post, and select the State, County, City, then add your neighborhood there, the same way we've always done it in the past.  Your neighborhood will still have to be approved.

2.  Step 2: If You Sponsored a Neighborhood

Here's the next step:  You'll need to go in and create a description for that community.  Click on the "My Account" link next to your photo at the top of the page. (you must be logged in to have this link available)

When you get to your Account screen, you'll see your neighborhoods and billing history.  On the right hand side of the page, you can click on the link "Write A Region Description", enter your description there.

Click on each link individually to write your descriptions.  Be sure to add descriptions for each neighborhood you have sponsored.  What you enter here is what will appear in the sponsorship portion of your new neighborhood page.

Lastly, fill out the description box and add the desired 3 links and titles, then save.  Only one link should lead back to you or a personal site, the other two, we're suggesting Local links that will be valuable to your community or neighborhood. Chamber of Commerce, Local Government, Major Attractions etc.  Be creative.

Samples of Descriptions Written By Other Members:

La Jolla, California
Fort Meyers Beach, Florida
Kihei, Hawaii
Fairhaven, Washington
Lawrence, Kansas

3.  Step 3: Let the Social Networking Begin

Now's the time to get up, and get out from behind that computer keyboard, put the mouse down, and start meeting and interviewing people all over your community.  When Localism goes public at the end of August, the REAL Land Rush will begin.  You need to be the Community Expert that can drive content and people to your neighborhoods and on-line communities.  You need to be the one to tell people about it, or someone else will, or they'll find it on their own like they do ActiveRain.  Anyone can join in a few weeks, so go on, get out there, just remember this important bit of information as you connect with your neighborhoods and people:

"Localism is a valued point of connection, a place of meaningful interaction. It's where neighbors and local merchants share what's happening in their community. It's people collectively communicating the unique flavor and nuances of where they live, work, eat, and play.  All in all, Localism provides the environment where residents and business owners can create a micro-social network uniquely attuned to their individual communities. Together, they will use multi-media to paint a canvas of local color and texture. Their Localism 'Neighborpedia' is an extension of who and what they are."

Great!  We're not live yet?  Anyway, I check out one the pages you suggested in your post.  How come 2 people come up as top neighbors and not just the person who owns the community?

Thanks for clearing things up!!

Brad - Great information for all of us to use. Now to get going on all those community write-ups.

Are the write-ups going to be monitored/approved? Will someone lose a community sponsorship if there is no write-up? Will communities that really don't make much sense be disabled? At what point do folks who have a majority of sponsorships in a town/city (over 40,000) find out if they have the town or city too? Just curious - I'm sure answers to these and other questions and issues are forthcoming.

Thanks, as always.

Quick question, Brad. When will you be posting more information on how the community will log in a and utilize Localism? For example, our local school. How would a teacher post or interact in our community?

Yvette - we are only live to ActiveRain members. Localism will be opened up to anyone from the public. That's why connecting with people and posting great content is so important. Think of the possibilities, it's like a golden ticket in to any place you want to build your community with.

There will always be two Top Neighbors on the screen, and when the person who sponsored the community does #2 of this post, you'll see that on the page as well, just like the samples above.  Owning the community is separate from Top Neighbors. Communities are sponsored, Top Neighbors are based strictly on content.

Hey Jeff -

Are the write-ups going to be monitored/approved?

yes

Will someone lose a community sponsorship if there is no write-up?

No, but that's a great point.

Will communities that really don't make much sense be disabled?

Maybe. Not if sponsored obviously, but if there is no information, and the public doesn't grab it up, that might be something to be reviewed.  Once Localism is Public (anyone can join or participate) those communities and neighborhoods may become very active. Only time will tell I think.

At what point do folks who have a majority of sponsorships in a town/city (over 40,000) find out if they have the town or city too?

That date and information hasn't been disclosed at this point, currently there are no cities/towns available for sponsorship in the system that I'm aware of.

Hope that was forthcoming enough for ya my friend..   :-)

Quick question, Brad. When will you be posting more information on how the community will log in a and utilize Localism? For example, our local school. How would a teacher post or interact in our community?

Debbie - There will be an entire series of posts coming out from Rich and I as things continue to develop.  The Land Rush was over today at 1:00pm pst.  We still have a few steps to go before the public rollout.

For example, our local school. How would a teacher post or interact in our community?

Right now, you can go meet and interview them, do a post about the teacher and the local school, and then when it does become available to them, you'll have been the one to introduce it, connect them, and connect with each other building the community together.

When you write/post about that teacher and school, and she and the school see it, (you email it to them of course) what will that do for them and for the community?  They'll love it!  It could be huge.  This is why content is so important.  Trust me, after a really great post, and the positive results that take place, the community will be coming to you to find out how to join.  :-)  By then we'll have the interface ready to go.

Fasten your seat belt, we're on the verge of something really big that is about to happen.....

Just had a thought: I'd go meet and interview the Mayor and then post about it. Tell them what you're doing and share your plan for building the community with valuable on-line content to promote the area.  That would be a good connection. Yeah, that's what I'm gonna do....

Watch for more posts...when I know more, you'll know more, I promise.  :-)

Posted by Missy Caulk, Savvy Realtor - Ann Arbor Real Estate (Missy Caulk TEAM) over 11 years ago

Missy - this is what Bob had posted, I didn't do the math but here's what I came up with fo you:

The price to sponsor a community/city will be:
|
* 1-10 communities/cities sponsored = $9 per community/city sponsored per month
* 11-25 communities/cities sponsored = $8 per community/city sponsored per month
* 26+ communities/cities sponsored = $7 per community/city sponsored per month

If it doesn't add up, let me know, we'll get it worked out.  Where did you see how much Jason pays? Just curious...  :-)

It appears to me that some communites in CAstro Valley were added after the RUSH.  They were not there before.  I guess I do not understand that.  Someone that wanted them did not put them there because they are not all sponsored.  Just Curious.

Also my partner kind of over did it and clicked on more communities than we wanted.  haha AKA the RUSH................Do we just cancel them when the first 30 days are up or can we sell them.  Little confused on how all that works.

Thanks for your help and all the infomration that you provide to us.

Hi Joan - They probably uploaded photos or wrote about the area. As more content gets provided and uploaded to those areas, those neighbors and top neighbors will be rotating out.  Regarding your communities and their legitimacy, if they are not, you should report them to AR and let us investigate. :-)

Jer - after I posted this, I noticed that too.  Everyone is asleep right now (except for maybe Matt) lol, but I'll check on that and be right back to let you know as soon as I find out. I didn't see a picture upload link when I went in just now to write a description.  I think that might be what Virginia meant when she said "no photo?"  Thanks for pointing that out my friend, I'm on it...no...you're on it!  :-)

Michelle - I'm looking into the photo addition first thing tomorrow...doh...today.  It's 3:00am here, need to get some sleep but I'm on it as soon as I wake up. The 600 characters will be locked at that amount I'm sure. It may not be right now, or it could be a sample that was setup prior to the launch.

Your photo on AR is good, but the localism photo shows an X, you need to contact AR and put in a support ticket. Just click on the "contact AR" link at the bottom of this screen.  :-)

Hi Pamela - communities can be added anytime before, now and in the future.  This post gives you the instructions on how to do that.  If your partner went click crazy, (lol) when you cancel after any amount of time, it will reset those communities back to Claim able instead of their current unavailable status.  You can not resell them.  You'll find that link and information when you login to Localism and click on the "My Account" link next to your photo.

Always great to hear from you, keep in touch. :-))

Susie - it's become an art hasn't it?  There is a common thread that works between all 3, I have had to experiment many times to finally get it right. Now it's just getting my video player to work and look right on all 3 platforms. I found that setting the player at 350 wide and no more works best. Like you and many others here, I'm still testing and experimenting too.  :-)

There are so many left...  I honestly think it wasn't advertised enough because i know many realtors we've spoken with recently didn't even know about it. Well it's not too late to create another such campaign this time perhaps on some other sites where realtors may be hiding. It would not only be an advertisement for localism but also for active rain.  Everyone should read Brad's benefits to localism post to really understand why you should be thrilled to be part of these groundbreaking community pages which in my opinion are far better(if only they fixed the content size issues) than city-blog.  Thanks again for the feedback as always brad.

Brad, In some markets when Localism goes public and gains steam, Are  you concerned that Big RE companies may decide to purchase say 100 communities/farm areas just for the backlinks on the description page. They will write a brief description and that's it. Do you see this as a problem? Gaming the system? Won't this dilute the brand and be contrary to the purpose of Localism?  Quantity over quality may very well prevail and become the brand. What can be done?

We didn't want blank pages with just text, tey were used to spice it up for the release.  They will be going away. :-)

Ginger and Roger - I don't see that as a problem, but let's not give or get any ideas here...  :-) Quality will prevail over quantity. If someone sponsors an area and doesn't provide content, then it's just an ad in my opinion.  We'll have a quality control effort ongoing, not to worry.  :-)

Hi Joan - thanks for your patience for my response.  The communities will renew each month automatically.  If someone unsponsors a community, that will change the "Unavailable" button to "Claim" on the subscribe page.  You'll have to check back to see.  That poses a great idea, why not have a backup plan in place where members could be notified when it does become available. Just like a backup offer, that would be cool. Not sure from a technical side how complicated that would be to setup, but I like the thinking and brainstorming here. Thanks.

Regarding the photos, there will be no photos uploaded on the sponsored community description. The photos there now were just samples in the pre-launch and were used to prevent having blank pages or only text for the launch. Merely cosmetic until the Land Rush was over.  They will ALL be removed.   :-)

I have tried many times to an a neighborhood via Active Rain, but the link is always bad. I did it once through Localism, though.

Patrick, I just tried it through AR and it works fine on my browser.  If you go in and create a new post, click on the option to place it on Localism, select the State, County and City, you can add the neighborhood there.  Not sure why it's not working for you, this is how we've always added neighborhoods from AR in the past. LMK.

Brad - The Fairhaven, Washington description is very well done with photgraphs in the text - how do we do that?  I see no where in the format that allows me to do that... do I have to be a tecvhie or something to do it?  It looks great!

Posted by Courtney Cooper, 206-850-8841 (Ben Kinney Brokerages Leadership at our Keller Williams North Seattle Office) over 11 years ago

Courtney - the photos you see in the sponsored area will be removed. There is no option to upload photos in that area. The ones you do see in place were used as sample layouts in the beginning launch. We didn't want blank pages with just text, they were used to spice it up for the release. They will be going away. :-)

Brad- Can you write a post to expand on what it is that we need to be saying and doing with our local businesses. Are they going to be joining Localism as bloggers, content providers, sponsors? What instructions to do we give them as to what they are to do once they get here. I would not just assume they would know what to do. I don't really know what they are going to do be doing. Are they going to be talking to each other on localism like on Facebook? Like the florist has a question for the wedding planner? Can you expand on all of this please?

Brad any chance we'll see a list of sponsors who bought communities on Localism. This would helps us figure out which niche (state, county) has the most interest and help us brainstorm as to how to get more realtors in other areas, some of which have had no sponsorships so far, to participate more.

Thanks.

Katerina - Rich will be starting a series of posts, and I'll be starting some trouble of my own in the days ahead. There will be plenty of information and creative ideas on ways to be successful with this in and around your local communities.  We are still in the walking stage, but soon we'll be running strong and fierce.

All the instructions and how to's will be coming soon.  Be patient....

BTW - if you can connect with the wedding planner and the florist now, you'll be better prepared to be the one to intoduce Localism to them and let them learn from you the best way to use it.  I like your idea.  If they want to use it like facebook, so be it.  As long as you're the one to put it all together and help them, that makes you the hero.  Then they tell a friend, and they tell a friend, and suddenly you go Viral in your community. Just a thought out loud...  :-)

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) over 11 years ago

Lane - when you say region, you're not referring to the sponsorship portion right?  Are you talking about at County or State level?

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) over 11 years ago

Debe - it will all pay off. As a community communicator (or reporter as you say...lol) you now have a golden ticket into anyone anywhere anytime you want to go.  Localism will open huge doors of opportunity for you.

Think of all the things you've done in your carreer that got you no business.  Showing property, doing listing presentations, CMA's, conferences, classes, training, traveling etc, Now you get to put all that experiece to work in your local communities.

You are a reporter in many ways. People rely on you to report to them the market, the value of their home, and the status of the home they want to buy...YOU ARE A REPORTER!!!  (Big Smile)  :-))

Castellum - for someone who won't even list their name on their profile or show their personal photo, you have a lot of nerve! lol~  And you want to see what?  haha  You know I'm just kidding!  The answer? No.

That is confidential information.  If members want to disclose it, and I'm sure some will, that's not a problem, but we will not be disclosing a list of members and the communities or neighborhoods they sponsor.  You can see by going to the individual communities in your area who are sponsoring them. You can also check the ones that are available by just going to the Sponsor a Community page.

I will tell you this my friend, we hit nearly 4000 the first week of the Land rush.  That's better than I expected, I think the next wave of Localism Community Sponsors is just about here....

Okay!  I get it--being a news reporter is NOT so bad if I'm going to become 'Viral' as you said in response to Katerina!  I'm always out and about asking questions and meeting folks in the community so, I think this may be a way to get my foot in the door of establishments which I once did not venture.  AND, introduce THEM to Localism and its benefits!  I just wish that there were more hours in the day!

As always, thanks for all you do!

Pamela - your post will show up on your profile at Localism.com. It may not have been selected as a feature for a couple reasons, but it is on your page.  Give m a call and I'd be happy to give you a couple suggestions. I also noticed that your post was only at the Castro Valley level and not a community or neighborhood.  Let's chat and see what we can do to help you out.  You know how to reach me!  :-)

Diane - here's a video that will give you instructions on how to better manage that clock on your wall.  This is for Debe too: Be sure to watch the clock on the wall, it's in slow motion to capture the full affect.  This is my recommendation for anyone who has issues with time: LOL!~

Brad...

I enjoy reading your blogs. I have a question for you and i'm not sure how to just send you like a private message. so i'll just ask you my question here and you can tell me or tell me where to find an anwser. How do i become a neighbor on localism.com? I've been posting blogs here on activerain that i want to go to localism and they arent showing up. So i'm still learning all this stuff. I just thought i would ask for some advise from a pro.

Thanks so Much!

Patt - the way to become a Top Neighbor on Localism is by adding and contributing content. That's it.  As you add more valued posts, your picture will show up as a top neighbor.  You are already a neighbor and can view that by clicking on "view all neighbors".  All your posts will show up on your Localism profile, even if they aren't featured in your specific community.  Make sure you are posting them to the proper communities when you create them on AR.  :-)

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) over 11 years ago

Brad:  I've asked this question over and over, and even had a feature about it, but have yet to get a "real" answer on: HOW TO  BECOME A TOP NEIGHBOR? It's not about points...or community sponsorship, so what does it take, exactly?  Thanks!

Posted by Kat DeLong, Realtor DRE#01235311, Lake Arrowhead Real Estate ( (LakeView Realty Enterprises, Inc) about 11 years ago

Kat - it's all about contribution and content.  Top neighbor is based on the most content, and the ones whom contribute the most to that area.  This includes, posts, photos, etc.  You can call me anytime if you need some tips and ideas.  Sponsored communities are great, being a top neighbor is awesome, and having posts and content keeps you on the front page of your community.  All 3 are areas to be utilized in providing, again, content.  Hope that helps, look forward to hearing from you if not.  :-)

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) about 11 years ago

Brad: Thanks so much.   I do contribute A LOT, but I guess, NOT enough. AND, I THINK my content has been Superior over most of the most in my area--I think that is what is most frustrating to me.

Thanks again.

Kat - as Localism grows and content becomes available in fifferent areas, you will see more changes and more often regarding top neighbors, like Victor says, just keep posting and it will happen.  Not sure why ANYONE would appear ahead of you, but it will all pan out in a very short time. Thanks, B~
