How to Add Pictures in Your Blog

A picture is worth a thousand words and it certainly enhances a blog.  Pictures get attention and help illustrate a point.  Sometimes pictures have no point, but then some blogs are pointless too!  :)

Before adding a picture, you need to know if it is protected by copyright.  If it doesn't belong to you, you can but the rights to use it, or you can use your own photo.  Using a photo that does not belong to you is stealing, plain and simple.

Where can you find pictures to purchase?

Doing a Google search for "royalty free photos" will yield many sources for photos. Please note, just because the photo is "royalty free" doesn't mean it is free.  You will need to pay for the photo.  You can buy a catalog of real estate photos, or a single photo.  I like using

IStockphoto

Stock.xching

Corbis

Most of the time, I prefer to use my own photos of sites in and around Denver, Colorado.  I take tons of photos and have a collection of pictures from many places. So when possible I use my own stock.  You can do the same.

Instructions for uploading Photos

I keep my photos on my hard drive in a folder called, "MY Pictures"  Within that folder I have additional subfolders named after what ever the photo is about. When I use a photo in my Blog, I keep that photo in a folder named "blog pics" just so I can easily find it.

Once you have written your blog, you can add a photo. While in the blog composition box, you click on the tool bar at the top.

After clicking on the "picture of a tree" another dialog box will appear. It looks like this:

demonstrating the process for adding a photo

The red arrow above shows where you need to click, It will bring up a "search box" that looks like this:

dialogue box to surf for photos

The next step; click on the "Browse" button. Now you need to know where the photo is on your computer.  Surf to the proper file.

My photo file looks like this:

sample blog photos

When you find your photo, click on it.  The file will then load into the "File Name" box.  Click "open"

The picture file is then loaded into the "Upload box" that looks like this:

picture upload dialogue box

Once you click on the "Upload Photo" box, the next box you will see will be one that requires you to adjust the photo's attributes for positioning on the page.  You will also give the photo a description (to aid impaired viewers & a title)  Be sure to pay attention to BOTH tabs at the top.  See the illustration below.

process for adding a photo

The Appearance tab looks like this:

setting horizontal space demonstration

The second tab is very important for placing your photo on the page.  If you don't give the proper instructions, you end up with a mess.

Once this section is complete, click INSERT.  In a few seconds (be patient) your photo will appear on your blog.  If it doesn't work, keep practicing.  Usually if it fails it's a user error.  I know about that, trust me!  :)

Hi Kristal,  I'm definitely a big fan of pictures in blogs... that is, afterall, how you found your dream house in Wenatchee!

Posted by Carol Williams Wenatchee Real Estate (Vision Real Estate) over 5 years ago
Kristal, How do we these framed? Do people ever use your photos? Google keeps a record of all the website photos. Have you ever looked at them to see how many of yours are in the google images. Maybe somehow you get points for these.
Posted by Eric Bouler ( Gardner Realtors, Licensed in La.) over 5 years ago

KK,

Thanks for complete explanation. I'm going to copy and print out your instructions and try it.

I can upload to my Google blog with no problems...so I should be able to do this.

And, I always use my own original photos...

Hi Carol,  Yes, that's my dream house.  I'm saving my pennies to buy it someday.  BTW where is Wenatchee?  ;)

Eric ~ Yes, people use my photos.  That's why I have an attorney.  :)

Eileen, I did this for you, after your request today.  It's been wierd making the graphics as I went.  I confused myself!  Let me know if it makes sense, or not!

Is your Broker an attorney too, lol. I have always wondered if google connects the photos to your site, will it hurt one who takes your photos. A girl in my office started using my condo photos. I told her google would frown upon the theft and her site. She quit from fear of google or me. " Oh I meant no harm, since you did the work, I just wanted to use them because I don't have time for that" I will remember her words
Posted by Eric Bouler ( Gardner Realtors, Licensed in La.) over 5 years ago
Eric, the sad but true truth is, the offender can get away with stealing because it is so expensive to pursue them.  So many people feel the same way as your associate.  It never ceases to amaze me.

Kristal,
Wenatchee is in the geographic center of Washington State.   The Apple Capital of the World and the Power Belt of the Pacific Northwest.  The region has the cheapest electric rates in the nation (2.5 cents per kwh) because of all the dams along the Mighty Columbia River.  This cheap power is what is luring Microsoft and Yahoo and other technology businesses to our area.

Posted by Carol Williams Wenatchee Real Estate (Vision Real Estate) over 5 years ago
Apples?  Cool, I love apples.  Cheap power is good. It sounds like a very nice area.  Do you have a lot of rain too?

Hope you're planning a Part II which relates to the various choices in the Attribute Tab.

GREAT POST  ! ! ! !

Except, with me, it's ALWAYS user error.

I love photos and images.  I plan to add more to my web sites soon.  I have thousands that I take just driving around.  I have a library of about 10,000 photos.  I need to get them organized.  I'll do that when I finished Homefinders.com new site and when I finish the new site for new homes that I started, and when I finish the new site for farms that I started and when I finish the new site for first time home buyers that I started and when I finish . . . . . . .

I can only imagine the amount of time you must've taken to put this blog post together considering all the photos and detailed instructions... but what I find even more amazing is that you did not get a gold star for it!  It's more than well-deserved.  They may not have awarded you an official one, but here's one from me!

I made the mistake of copy and paste my pictures into one of my first blogs.  It should up on my, but never made to the official posting.  I have since learned... the fun part is finding pictures on the net that I can use.

Thanks.

Ginger ~ Isn't it funny how we can look at something and not really See it!  I do that more often than I care to admit.  Glad to have been of help.

Ann ~ Ann you are welcome.  Hope you find it easy to understand, if you didn't  know it already.

Jay ~ We used to have to use Flickr, then one day that changed.  In fact I didn't even notice it until Sharon Simms mentioned it.  It was another one of those things I couldn't see for lookin'.

Sharon ~ I did instructions a long time ago, but now they are outdated.  I agree, it's much easier  now to load photos.

Lenn ~  LOL, you mean like logging in when you are commenting on the blogs?  That's OK what ever you do is OK by me.  You are fabulous.  Besides I don't ever want to get on the wrong side of a woman who is a champion shooter...not smart on my part!  haha

Ines ~ Thanks Ines, the hardest part was remembering what I was doing making a graphic or writing about it or where I was in what I was doing...yaddy yaya...  It wasn't that hard...

Leanne ~  Thanks for the Gold Star, I do appreciate that! I just hope the detailed instructions are understandable.  Not everyone can understand "jersey."  :)

David ~ Once you try illustrating with a photo or two, you won't go back!

Jason ~ LOL, lot's of people do that.  It's funny when you tell them "I can't see your pictures" and they don't believe you because they can see the photos!  One of my competitors make that mistake on his website.  I might have told him, but since he took my content (he's since removed it) I let him make a silly fool of himself.  To bad! But now Jason you know...

Thanks all for stopping by.  Please let me know if the instructions are clear enough to follow.

Better late than never, responding to your blog!  I've just got to ask - were you a trainer in your past life? Those screen prints are exactly how I used to write my training manuals. A picture IS worth a thousand words! Great job. But really - were you a trainer????

Ed ~ my pleasure!

Deb Salkeld ~ Trainer?  Not really.  I have given a few talks in my time, top producer panels, Realtor techie stuff (that is not really techie, but to Realtors is was :).  Thanks for the compliment...I assume you meant it that way.

The photos do help people see what it is I am trying to say! Photos help with so much more than this...

Hey Kristal,

For part 2, how about all those things that show up under the tab "appearance"?  The 'vertical space', 'horizontal space', etc. - what does all that mean?  I insert my picks, choose from 'alignment' on where I want it, and then resize and use the space bar once it's inserted if I need to adjust it.  What do those other things mean?

Thanks!!

Also, when you are taking pictures, are you taking them on the highest quality setting and then reducing them to fit your web page, or are you taking them on the lower quality settings? Have you found that one method is better than the other?

Very helpful - I had disregarded the "appearance" tab.  Now, at the risk of sounding totally ignorant, to get it so that text is in the open space to the right or left of the photo, I assume I have to put something into the boxes for vertical space and horizontal space... maybe class...  Help!  What goes in there for a typical blog - could you make a suggestion?  Once I have some idea, I can tweak it from there, but I don't know where to start.  THANK YOU!

Hi Kristal, thank you for the great information.  I am trying to create on my personal real estate website (http://www.myownmyrtlebeach.com/) where my clients can come together and upload pictures of the area, their experiences, and community functions.  My webmaster (z57) says I can not do that directly on my site because that would involve giving access to the public on the backend.  Then they recommended creating a blog on Activerain and have it framed into my site.  I have created a blog here called Share Your Myrtle Beach and put it on my website (http://myownmyrtlebeach.com/professional4.shtml) My question is this, I see that visitors that are not registered with Activerain can submit comments to my blog but cannot insert/upload their pictures, is it possible for non-registered members to upload their private pictures to our blogs?  Thank you for all your wonderful assistance and knowledge!

Louise ` Are you holding down the "CTRL" key while clicking on "browse?" Try it that way it might help. Popup blockers sometimes prevent you from searching this way.

Another reason that might trick you up is if you have too many windows open.  I've found that on occasion the window is actually opening but it is below other windows so you can 't SEE it!

Give it a try now!  Hope that helps.

Posted by Rich Cotton The Waterfront Specialist EXiT Preferred Realty about 3 years ago

Rich, Tell me step by step what you are doing.  Are you importing from another program?  If so, there is code in the formating that is causing the photos not to align right.  You will need to find it and delete it.  You can do that by looking at the HTML version in AR.  If you do that be sure to SAVE you work before switching views, otherwise AR will delete your work.

Describe to me what you are doing and I might be able to help.

Katherine,

I browse with either Mozilla Firefox or of late Google's Chrome.

Your issue might be because of pop up blockers.  If so try holding down the "Ctrl" key when you wait for the windows to pop up.  If that doesn't help, I'm not sure what to tell you.

Give it a try and let me know.

Great post, you really made it easy to upload pictures. I do have another question, can you lock your pictures on AR so they can't be copied? If so would you mind sharing? Thanks and I just can't explain how much I love the AR community.

Posted by Nikki Boad (Accurate Realty Group with Keller Williams) about 2 years ago

Hi Nikki,

Thank you, I'm glad you found the information helpful!

As per your question about "locking" photos so they can't be copied.  No, you can't.  There are software programs you can subscribe to that will put a type of "tracing code" on a layer of your photo.  When someone steals it, the code is traced and you can go sue the thief.

LOL, considering how many people think nothing of poaching photos, you could make a nice fortune pursueing them, assuming they have money to pay you.  Of course you will need a slick attorney who will go after them, of course unless you are one, that also costs a few dollars.

Ownership of photos belongs to you but to protect them via statutes you need to register your copyright.  Otherwise you have to "prove" they are yours.

All this is a lot of work, most people aren't willing to pursue theives, so theives persist.

The easiest solution is to put a big old watermark on the pic to deter anyone from taking them.  Then it ruins your art!

I see many of my old photos on my competitors websites. What I did is go learn how to take better photos, now their (stolen) photos look crappy!

How's that for a good plan?

Kristal ~ I've uploaded pictures before, but couldn't figure out how to format them until I read your directions. Thanks for this (not so recent) post!  I found it with a Google search :)

Matt & Karen,  You are welcome!  This post keeps getting comments, I wonder how people actually find it!  Glad to be of help,

Kristal,  I get all the way to the UPLOAD box and then it stalls and then I get error message saying Bad Server.  I've tried using both Internet Explorer and Mozilla and neither work.  Can you advise?

I'm still having problems uploading photos. I discovered the attributes tag this morning, but it was great getting an explaination.

I get

Bad Gateway

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.

Apache/2.2.3 (Red Hat) mod_ssl/2.2.3 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 Server at activerain.com Port 80

Kathy, The error message you are receiving is from AR's server.  It's nothing you are doing wrong.  Try it a few times more, perhaps it will go away.

Good luck!

How do I get my profile picture in my blog comments?

Jim,  Your profile image will appear when you have written a certain amount of comments and/or blogs.  I'm not sure what the number is, so keep writing!
