Many Businesses and Companies work so hard using a variety of means and efforts to get their name out there and noticed on the web, it amazes me how many miss the little things like this that can make a huge difference in accomplishing a part of their goal.

Hi Brad ~ I have to admit to being confused about business listings. Since I'm confused I haven't gone down this path.

As an agent, not a broker or company owner and as an agent in an office with 50+ agents:

What is my business name? My name? My website's name?

What is my address? My office's address? Even if that means there could eventually be 51+ "businesses" listed at that address?

Any insights would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

For those who are outside of the US it is a bit more work.  Many of the US based search engines do not have the option to submit your Canadian business.  Google does, but Yahoo and Bing do not.  Owning the top spot on the google map for business can be a great tool though.

Anything that helps me and my business is good thing. Now I will have to go and check this out big guy.

Thanks for this - hadn't heard of BOTW.  People might also look at local.com and list on yelp.com (where customers can rate you and add reviews) - all of it is free!

BRAD - I had asked the same question as well regarding being a single agent but then felt silly for doing so.  I went ahead and signed up to all 4 as "Andi Grant Real Estate" because I am an independent contractor with a business address (my broker's).  Let me know if you find out otherwise. :)

Brad, Can I personally claim a listing as an independent contractor with a businiss address of my broker's office, or is this only for the office?  And, what exactly is the significance of "claiming your listing"?  What does it do for you?  Can you please explain in simple layman terms.  Thanks

Hi Lora - that would be a question to ask your Broker or Office Manager.  I can see where there may be some issues if 50+ agents were to add their Business Listings all with the same office address.  I'm thinking that the search engines would somehow have to sort that out.

I would also be careful about publically listing your home address as an office unless you use that address as an Official Business, and it's posted publically in other locations. 

GetListed.org is primarily for listing any Business in the US with a postal zip code. (here's a detailed explanation of what they do)  If a consumer does a "Business" search using any of the four listed search engines, you would probably want your business to show up as a "Listed" business.  They also offer some great suggestions and tips for making sure you're getting maximum Internet exposure.

In my opinion, I would see that someone (whether it's you or your Broker) gets your office listed.  When I did a search for "Coldwell Banker" in the "10901" zip code, it gave me this result. 

This isn't something you have to do, but I can't see why anyone wanting their "Business Listing" to be found in any of the search engines wouldn't want to.  It's kind of like not being in the phone book or local directory of Businesses.  I hope that helps.  :-)

Todd - excellent point, that's why I use retaggr.com to keep track of all my online profiles and sites, just in case I needed to change an email address or phone number, that way I have a single place to go and know where all my updates need to be made.  :-)

Janet - that's a great question, probably one best left and answered by the Broker of your office. I'm sure they can help you come up with a creative way to accomlish this. :-)

thx.  This is great advice. Last August I did a lot of this. Then, I supplemented my efforts in Jan of this year.  Sounds like it's time for a revisit since I'm sure I've missed some (and maybe some new ones exist now).  Thx for the reco on this particular site.
