How To Add Video in the Comment Section of a Blog Post

How To Add Video in the Comment Section of a Blog Post

Jeremy Blanton just did a great video tutorial for members showing how you can add video to your AR Blog posts.  He requested that I do a tutorial on how to embed a video into the comments of a post like TLW did on his.  We get this request much more frequently now, so I guess it's time.

This tutorial is for members using Mozilla Firefox as their Browser.

NOTE: Any and ALL members can use Firefox as a browser without conflicting with their use of Microsoft's Internet Explorer Browser, in fact, both browsers can be open at the same time and running side by side. So this is really for ALL ActiveRain members.

***VERY IMPORTANT***

The Object and Embed codes the come directly from Youtube WILL NOT WORK when copied into a comment on AR posts.  Just the code will appear with no video.  This will annoy you and the author, So DON'T do it.  :-)

You'll Need ScribeFire To Do This

The Firefox Browser allows you to have add-ons or plug-ins.  The first thing you'll need to do is go to ScribeFire.com and download their add-on for your browser.  ScribeFire is an extension for the Mozilla Firefox Web Browser that integrates with your browser to let you easily post to your blog.  You can change font colors and re-size them and you'll find many other great uses for this little add-on, but today we'll focus on adding video to comments.

STEP ONE

Once you've downloaded and added Scribefire to your Browser, you can press the "Function +F8" keys to open up the Scribefire toolbox which will pop-up in the lower half of your computer screen. It will look like this:

STEP TWO

In the toolbar of Scribefire's add-on, you'll see a Youtube Icon , click on it.

STEP THREE

Enter the search term or user name for the video you wish to add.

*Find any Youtube video, grab the URL link, and copy/paste it into the search box, it will pull up that video.

Once you enter your search criteria, click the search button and your video or selection of videos will appear.

STEP FOUR

Click on the video you wish to add to your comment, then click the OK Button. This will add a video box in the Scribefire screen.  Now just "Right Click" your mouse in the Scribefire Screen next to the video and choose the option to "Select All".  "Right Click" your mouse again and select "Copy", then go to the comment box of the ActiveRain post, "Right Click" a third time and select "Paste".

VERY IMPORTANT: Your video code will NOT appear in the comment section of the post, but it is there.  When you submit your comment, the video will magically appear, and you're done!  (I'll add one to the first comment of this post as a sample.)

OPTIONAL STEP - RESIZING VIDEO

To re-size videos, you'll need to edit the HTML and just change the Width and Height which I'll show you here.

From the Scribefire Toolbar, click on the HTML edit button that looks like this: This Icon is located at the top of the Scribefire toolbar. Now you will see the HTML code where you can change the size attributes of your video.  You will need to change the dimensions in TWO locations highlighted below for it to resize the video and work.

Lastly, highlight and copy and paste the edited code into your comment and you're done.

Final Wrap-up & Video Commenting Disclaimer

Now you're probably telling yourself, "Self, this is a lot of work just to add a video to a comment on ActiveRain!"  Yes, it is.  Having an occasional video show up in a comment or two of your post or someone else's is fine, but if everyone did this to your Blog post, could you imagine how long it would take for that post to load?  Video will slow down the load time of the authors Blog so please keep this in mind if you decide to add a video to another members post.  Also be sure that if you do add video, that it is not copyright protected material and it is relevant to the authors post and topic.

Although this may seem long and complicated, once you do it a couple times, it's pretty simple, but keep in mind to respect the author, the post, the topic and the network.  While adding video to a comment can be useful and a great tool, it can also be a nuisance and disturbance to the "ActiveRain Force!"  Hopefully this is more complicated than you're willing to experience, and you'll just bookmark it and continue to leave comments instead. LOL~

Feel Free to use this post as a place to test leaving your video comments, this way I can help you, and then I can delete them if it gets too out of hand, and this post no longer loads! :-)

Great stuff, but I have a question...  After the video plays YouTube shows a selection of other videos to show?  How can I stop this from happing and just allow the user to view the video I selected???

Saturday back in April was International Pillow Fight Day, and folks showed up on Wall Street demanding bail out checks. A pillow fight ensued... I guess this is much safer than what could have happened!

Richard or Janet - great question. When using video in your Blog posts, you can uncheck the box that brings up related videos.

When using video in comments per this procedure, you can disable that feature but it's a bit more complex.... let me go try to be certain. :-)

For Richard and Janet - Testing this video to see if I can add a border and remove the related videos that come up at the end.  This is only a test but it is one of my Favs from TLW and Broker Bryant! :-)

...and it looks like it worked.

Hi Brad, This is a very cool idea. I was leaving just such a thing for Gary Woltal a couple days ago as his Mom passed away and I wanted to leave him a Josh Groban song that was appropriate for the expression of sympathy I was leaving. I titled it and left it as link for him to click on. This  is a much preferable way. Thank you for sharing this, I do use scribefire for leaving special notes with increased fonts in color and styles that make it more fun. So now I will try this.

Blog-N-Roll...

I just figured out that if you make your comment first then edit in the video with smaller dimensions it works better. At least for me it did :)

Now I have to figure out how you got the border and elimated related vids. But first I have to eat. My trip down the black hole made me hungry :)

@TLW and Richard or Janet ~

To add the border and eliminate the related videos at the end, you have to copy a specific section of the <object embed code> from Youtube.  Once you've added the border of choice on Youtube, and unchecked the box to show related videos, here's the steps.

Just replace the selected portion of the video code from Youtube into your Scribefire HTML. Here's how:

Step 1: - Take the code from Youtube Below:

Step 2: - Now just replace the code from your Scribefire HTML as shown below:

That's it!

I fear I may have lost some of you following along... sorry.  :-))

Let me see what I can do to explain the Copyright laws of Youtube.  Start with the Youtube Copyright Page.   Next, review the Youtube Terms of Service

There are two areas I think most are concerned with.

1. Uploading copyrighted material to youtube to share and for others to use, and  2. Using and embedding others videos that are copyright protected or copyrighted material...so how do you know?

Then there is the "Fair Use" which even the copyright office says is unclear and I quote, "The distinction between fair use and infringement may be unclear and not easily defined. There is no specific number of words, lines, or notes that may safely be taken without permission."

So I leave you with this.....

The Great YouTube Copyright Debate

Learn More About Copyright

I hope this helps, it's the best I could do for now....

Okay Blog-N-Roll...

I'll try to explain in now. The first thing you need to do is make sure your FireFox Browser is allowing AR pops up. Now go over to You Tube, find your video, add your border and eliminate related vids. Now copy the embed code. Next go to the comment box you want the video in and click your cursor into it. Then hit ctrl v A box comes up. Paste the embed code in that box. While in that box you can alter the vid dimensions. When you're done click on insert and submit comment. Your vid should pop right up. If it doesn't, I didn't explain it right :)

I'll leave the tutorial about this in your capable hands :)

Great explanation TLW. I think we're ready for you to start writing some tutorials. As far as the ctrl + v, I use a MAC so I'll find the equivalent strokes and try it myself. Talk about having a post take a turn so quickly.... Lol ~ now go play and have a great weekend. :-)

I love the video blogs, thanks for the blog.  Very helpful!

Frighteningly easy!

Thank you Brad!

I've refrained from posting a video here in an effort to help your page load faster. But I now know how to do it and I'm not afraid to break out the occasional video comment!

Posted by Craig Rutman, Raleigh, Cary, Apex area Realtor (Helping people in transition) about 9 years ago

Thanks Craig.  :-)

For me, this post is still loading surprisingly fast, even with all the video that is already here. I'm sure for anyone on dialup, they'll probably not wait long enough to even read our comments here.  lol~

Brad:  Thanks for posting this, I have bookmarked to be read hundreds of times before implementing!  Your are just an incredible source for technology.  Thank You.

Brad, this is way cool. I've been gone for a week so I have a lot of catching up to do!

Thank you so much for the easy to follow instructions!  I just posted a blog with a virtual tour I produced for my brother.  http://activerain.com/blogsview/1247345/amazing-virtual-tours-online-

Thanks so much for you great advice!

Nancy - your video was amazing. I see you are working with animoto.com, a great choice and awesome product. Very well done, thanks for sharing that.  Make sure you post that to our Virtual MLS Group here on AR. :-)

I just have to share it here in these comments.

Brad - Thanks for sharing this tutorial!  I was able to accomplish the same thing in a different way that might appeal to people using Internet Explorer, or those that don't want to add a plugin to Firefox.  I created a draft blog post, embedded the video by posting the embed code that youtube provides under the HTML tab of the blog post editor, then I saved that blog post as a draft.

Once it was saved, I just highlighted the video, by holding my mouse button down and dragging the mouse over the video, then I copied it using "Ctrl C".  Finally I went to the comment where I wanted to embed the video and pasted it using "Ctrl V".

Just as you described above, I didn't see anything added to the comment window until I posted the comment and the video appeared.

All that's left to do is go back and delete that draft blog post.

I just thought I would share this as an alternative.

Brad,

Thanks for the "How to".  I just used it to upload a vid to the first AR "Blog" Halloween party.  Everybody come.  I put it in a comment on today's party host post.  Works like a champ.

Scribefire is pretty cool.

Will this also work for group only posts?  That editor doesn't have the html option that the regular post editor does.

Next up, how to ad animation to our profile pics. : )

Mike - I haven't tried it when just posting to groups only, but I'm sure using the scribefire tool would be the best way to test it. I know the posting format to groups is different than it is to your blog.  Give a test and let me know.  :-))

Works great.  Here's the link:

Welcome to the AR "Blog" Party Group

Now, how do you do animated profile pics?

Posted by Mick Michaud, Your Texas Lifestyle is Here! (Distinctly Texas Lifestyle Properties, LLC Office:682/498-3107) about 9 years ago

Mike - glad that worked out for you. Love the party idea.  As far as animated AR profile photos, the option is not available that I'm aware of. You can only use images in the proper format like .jpg, .gif, .png, .bmp, etc.  Animation files will work within a post or on your sidebar, just not as a profile pic. :-)

This is great - a very easy to follow tutorial.  Now to make the vidos so I can put them into my blog.

Brad, I've already bookmarked this post and used it to embed a video in the comments section (THANK YOU!) but I'm finally leaving a comment because of the same scavenger hunt that Rich is on. :)

Blog-N-Roll...

I just posted it. Feel free to critique me. I really think I suck at Tutorials. I'm much better at bossing people around :)

By the way, next time I'm just going to ask you to do it. It's much easier, you excel at it and I send everyone over to your Blog anyway :)

This excellent blast from the past by Brad Andersohn deserves a re-blog. He requested that I do a tutorial on how to embed a video into the comments of a post like TLW did on his.  We get this request much more frequently now, so I guess it's time.

This tutorial is for members using Mozilla Firefox as their Browser.
