Many of us use Youtube to host a variety of Real Estate and personal videos. I noticed that when videos are done playing, in most cases, other videos will pop up on the screen that have a similar topic or title. Does this hurt or help you? I guess this depends on how you "see" it, no pun intended. Having a video on your site or post can certainly help to create a more captive audience, but those next videos that pop up may be having a subtle and adverse affect.
Yesterday, I was watching a Real Estate Video that was really interesting. I watched all 3 minutes of it. Then, when their video was finished, up came another agents video that had nearly the same title?!? The second video was a bit more produced, had better sound quality, was clearly a higher quality camera, and seemed to have a better videographer. Plus, the video was only 1:20 minutes long. At the end of the "competitors" video was a phone number and annotation that included a call to action. Hmm...
So how do you prevent your competition and others from coming up on "Your" Youtube videos? Hopefully this tip will help prevent this from ever happening to you...ever again. When using Youtube Videos on your Blog posts or sites, you might want to take these next steps and precautions before pasting that object embed code. I'll use these screen shots below as examples in hopes this makes more sense.
You want this: Not This:

When you get or use ANY video from Youtube, there are some options available you may not be aware of. This will come in very handy if you're uploading your own or using any videos from youtube. When you create or find the video you wish to link or embed into your site, you'll see these options available located on the right side of the video.

Top Line is the URL used to provide a link to the video
Bottom Line is the embed code used to embed on your site
There is a tiny graphic just to the right of the embed code (a settings gear) that little blue thingy
that probably 90 percent of people never see. Click On it! This allows you to customize and make changes to the video and player.

This is the culprit right here.
If you leave that box checked, you'll have no control over what shows up after your video plays. If you leave it checked, you're taking a chance on having some videos pop up that might not "Best represent" you, your Blog or the site it's being seen on.
This is happening with and to millions of videos, and they call it viral. Can you see why now?
Once you get this out of the way, you can also customize your Video by changing the size and adding a custom border. Just click on that "settings" graphic and it's all there. I suggest the 445x365 or 500x405 for ActiveRain Blogs. Only copy the embed code for your video "AFTER" you have completed these steps, that is unless of course you don't mind what videos come up after yours.

The video below is my 13 second claim to fame. It's short, raw, and took me the least amount of time and effort to create other than getting to the place where I shot it. Because it is titled "The Glory Hole" or "The Black Hole" you can imagine some of the other videos that would pop up in the viewer after mine. :-O I sure didn't want Mom to see some of those other videos that were supposedly related. Yikes! We won't go there today. This little video has had over half a million views with nearly 1000 comments. Question is, where did they go and what did they see after mine...or YOURS?

Brad - this is a sensational tip. I hate having other videos pop up. HEading off to make changes. Love your sharing spirit!
Jeff
Brad, great info. I'd noticed a while back that you could customize your embed code to not include related videos as well as to create the borders/sizing, etc.
With some of the videos that I've done, I'm not sure that I'd want other related videos popping up. Though on another note, some of my videos have been found due to be related to other videos out there.
Brad, I haven't done videos in a couple of months. Need to get back to it AND now they'll be improved! You're always so helpful!
Some of the related videos that come up next to mine are my videos. I have no problem with people seeing this kind of stuff because they can see it anyways. I get your point though.
Brad...All your tips ROCK...but this one is ROCKIN!!!! Thanks for this info.
Now to the burning question.....What in the heck was that, and I hope there were no boats close by!!!
I have been away from Active Rain for a while but I am glad I read this. Thank you for sharing this valuable tip Brad.
Hey Brad, thank you for the tip. I just started making recordings to promote on youtube! I am excited about it, but am running into problems here and their. I think it is a very smart way to promote sales. I haven't yet posted anything because I am working on getting rid of the sound, then going to record over it. Right now, I sound like I am breathing heavy and yelling into the super sensitive microphone! I wish there was a button to click for that! Kim
Brad - As usual, I learned something here today. Thanks. I'm off to look at YouTube.
Brad - I had no idea that I could do this! Thanks, again, for great information... :)
Thanks Brad!
I learned something new and useful.
Bill
Great post. Thanks.
Love the video. Thanks for the tip about You Tube. Did not know there is an option to leave off related videos.
Richard
Hi Brad...Thanks for the tip. I have not posted any videos yet. Who knows if I ever will. But if I do, I have added this to my favorites under videos just in case. I will be sure to follow your advice.
Thanks again. What a difference this will make for many of us.
Kate
Thanks Brad, great information.
Brad - so why do you post things that make me want to spend all of my time tweaking my marketing instead of selling houses?!?!? Thank you...I think....;-P
once again you rocked out the education curve..thanks again.
once again you rocked out the education curve..thanks again.
As always, very clear, visual, great tips to enhance our presence and what to watch for to make us better. You truly are an asset to AR!!
Great Info. Brad!
This is good to know. I have used very few videos but we need to have this info. Thanks.
Hi Brad: Thanks for the information - educational as always! :)
Excellent, excellent! You addressed an issue that has bugged me for literally years.
One more tip from the University of Brad, Thanks
Brad... It hit me a couple of weeks ago. My Sr Daughter got married to an 'Anderson'... We had a blast. Quite a few attendee's took short videos from their cellphones on the dance floor etc. and posted to YouTube. It was really fun, and so are the videos... But then I noticed (I can hear the flush)... we were confronted with everything 'Anderson' from everywhere on the planet... and you would have thought that YouTube would have organized associations better. The next up... had nothing to do with Jon and Tawnya... It appeared to me like some kind of random (Anderson) number generator, like: Cuz you watched this, you might be interested in that. Hmmm... quite an algorhythmn... "No, sorry, I'm not interested." Then I thought how real estate uses YouTube, and now I'm thinking... CAUTION... yellow alert.
thanks... great insights as always.
Rene'
Thank you Brad! Once again, this is terrific information, and one that I will bookmark - I love those youtube videos!
http://www.PoconoLandAndHomes.com
Hi Brad, great tip. To bad a lot of others don't know about this. I don't like half of the related videos that follow what I had searched for.
By the way, what camera do you recommend to use to get good quality videos.
Thanks,
Al and Peggy Cunningham
Brad,
I am patting myself on the back, as I somehow stumbled on that and know that you can get rid of "pesky" videos
Brad: You rock! I had noticed the same thing on a video. Thanks for the tip.
Brad. This is very useful information. Thanks very much!
Greg
Thanks for the information. I will watch this from now on
Brad, this is so helpful. This info came at the right time since I will be helping some realtors in the area to use YouTube .
I have hesitated to use YouTube for that reason. Thanks for the great tip.
great tip, Brad, I have been looking for an answer on that one and you just gave it to me
Dave
Brad - Is there no end to your knowledge? Thanks so much for sharing this tip. I'm sure I'll have to check back in on this post to be sure I got all the juice from it. You sure pack a lot of great infor into every post.
Yet another great tip from you, Brad. It's great to know how to control your videos as much as you possibly can.
Brad! Brad! This is great! Can we keep the "share" icon though??
Great post, thank you!
Thanks so much for yet another informative post, and a style of delivery second to none. When I saw the title, I almost freaked out! That is a perfect reason why we should have control over our videos...Thanks!
YouTube is a great resource for real estate virtual tours! These same features that YouTube employs, like including related videos, can also be done on your own personal site if you are savvy enough to figure it out!
Amazing how unchecking one little box can make a difference. This is a great tip and an easy to understand tutorial.
Thanks for sharing that tidbit. I have been slow to getting around to doing the videos, but, now I will have some extra helpful information.
Thanks Brad I use youtube. that will help alot.
Joe
Great tips Brad, thanks. After all the work that goes into it, it would be a shame for another to steal one's thunder.
Thanks for the tip, Brad. Just learning the ropes to youtube embedding. Sure helps the learning curve
Good tip, Brad - I learned that particular tip the hard way! Thank goodness it wasn't as drastic as could have been with your "Black Hole" video! LOL
Brad I just love you. Seriously thanks for the tip. I'd found the button and I'd found the cute little borders... but who knew? Thanks.
Brad,
Oh my, thanks so much for the valuable info. Interesting how such small things can have a major impact. I love how the value of AR just keeps continuing on!
Brad - you are right I never paid attention to that little box. Great catch! I got to go in and fix all my vids now. Geez your always giving me more work to do. lol
Thanks for the tip though. A great little bit of info that nobody would notice. I didn't!
BTW nice title :-)
Bob H
Brad - WOW! I just finished teaching a class on YouTube in my office and this was everyone's biggest concern. I had no idea you could disable the other videos from popping up...this is great information!
Brad: This is great information... Not good for other videos to loop... Never know what someone could really put out there either...
Hi Brad! GREAT tip--you won't believe this but, on this, my 13th anniversary, my hubby gave me a FLIP video! WooHoo! I am SO excited and can't wait to start uploading to YouTube--so your post is quite timely!! Thanks and I'm going to definitely take your advice and use these tips--I certainly don't want to be confused with those other videographers!! ;-)
Hey Brad, You are so smart! I had wondered about this problem with using youtube. You solved it! 3 cheers for Brad!!!
Brad- I use the customized features for youtube videos even when I am just putting up a video that someone else produced, like a song. Most of the time I don't like their 'other' choices so I usually turn off the view similar video box. I really like the color customizing and have been playing around with that when I have the time to really customize the video. Thanks for the great tips because I know many people do not know about this otherwise they would not have their competitors on right after them:)
Brad - can't believe no one asked.... can we see the "better video"? The 1:20 minute competitor's? If you thought it was so great I'm sure you've taken it's best ideas... we'd all love to as well :)
Brad,
I didn't like this, but I didn't know how to solve the problem. I'll get this taken care of on posts.
Thank you.
I recognize that Black Hole....spent many many a wonderful weekend anchored at Big island, Lake Berrysessa.
Really Really appreciate this sharing!! Cheers.
Yep! I was right. You know everything.
Great tip I haven't started using videos yet ... learning to walk before I start running.
Awesome timing... I've uploaded about a dozen videos to youtube, and it has really bothered me that it goes to the related videos. SO GLAd to know this tip.
Great tip! I didn't know about this, so I'm happy you shared. Just getting going on video and want to use it more.
Very useful, Brad - Thank you
I may learn something here, if I'm not careful.
This is terrific info -- thanks for posting and sharing with us.
Great info, Brad! Thanks for sharing!
Brad, thank you for the tip. It can make a huge difference.
Thanks fo the tip.
Hi Brad,
Thanks for this post. I've been trying to figure this out for a while. Do you know how to make these changes once the video has already gone live?
Great tip Brad!
Thank you once again!
Oh, and your "claim to fame" video was very interesting.
According to Andy Warhol, you've used up 13 seconds of your 15 minutes of fame.....What will you do with those other 14 minutes and 47 seconds?!!!
Brad: Thank you for saving us from the Glory Hole related video effect!
I had clicked the blue button once just see to what it was for. I have never changed anything though and never thought much of it. I can see hy you would want to do this but isn't the default set not to play more videos?
Hi Brad,
What an awesome tip. Thanks for solving this issue for me, I have wondered about that problem before.
Brad - thanks for the tip! I have not incorporated Youtube in my business, but when I do, I'll definitely take this advice in consideration.
Brad, I had been wondering about this very topic ever since I was viewing a video someone had posted and at the end the pop up offerings included a very sexual (not something I would want on my site) video, but clicked on anyway, HA HA, and it would not open the other offerings. I guess there is a default setting like Bill mentioned above.
I had noticed the check box but was not sure how it worked. Thanks so much for being our "Investigator"!
And PLEASE tell me....if one enters the black hole in your video, where do they end up? I might need a vacation away from the phone for a few days! :o)
I guess my post back in December on this same topic was missed by many.
Clicking that button just "&rel=0" into the video url in the code in two spots.
There are other neat things you can do. You can have an embedded video start playing at a specific time point. Let's say that you want someone to watch something in the video starting at second number 55. You can add "&start=55" to the the url in the video code.
Hi Brad, first of all thanks again for the valuable tips. Secondly as for the title of your 13 second claim to fame video, so glad you did not include related videos and your Mom's eyes are intact!
Brad-yes this is something..I sometimes forget to do! Thank you for the tips..
Brad - Thanks Thanks Thanks! and Thanks!
Mary
Brad, thanks for the information. I bookmarked this post for future use. Thanks again.
Brad...
Man oh man...I'm happy to see that. I have porn type stuff coming up on my swimming video. It's good to know I can go in and get rid of it. And just a quick story for you. Recently I had to delete a comment on my counter offer video. A Realtor came in with a video comment explaining what a counter offer is. My thoughts were "Excuse me Sir, we know what a counter offer is and we like shooting them". I then Poofed his bum right on into cypberspace. He should be near Mars right about now :)
TLW...ROAR!
Brad I am convinced that you are a encyclopedia reincarnated.
Brad - looks like when you change the first one of your existing videos, it changes all those underneath to the new customization. If this is in fact true - GREAT!
Thanks for the awesome post - I too was just wondering the other day if this could be done - such a mindreader that you are!

Great information, thanks for the post.
Nice work. thank you so much for the step by step help to fix the issue.
Hi Brad,
Thanks, I showed this to my web guy so we don't make that mistake.
Thank you for giving this information!!! I have been so disgusted with the "previews" that come up right after my videos play. I don't want the videos of a competitor showing up after mine plays.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

Hm, very interesting. But I wonder if there's a way to link videos together on purpose, so a viewer can easily see all you have to offer.
Brad - I'm always learning, I had no clue - thanks a million!
Brad...
As you are the resident Guru on these matters...Any ideas on why I wouldn't be able to sign on to my UTube Account? Is it true people steal our accounts and change the passwords?
TLW...ROAR!
THanks!
Hi Brad: I learned something new today! I don't use YouTube because of the very reason you mentioned, instead I've been using Viddler because at the end only the videos that you created pop up. I had no idea the setting button was available on YouTube. Great information!
Have a great day,
Anne Rains
Thanks I have been using video, but needed to know how to make these modifications.
I am normally wordy. Wow! I think I will compose a Haiku in your honor.
Best post I've read today. Brad, you are "scary good." Thanks!
Thanks Brad! Many people have started to utilize video and to some degree it is wonderful. But when you begin to compare videos, even amateur "filmmakers" can see which ones have better quality, etc. Great advice!
thank you so much for sharing! Great tip!!!! I am about to post my first video and wondered the pros and cons of having others pop up after mine since mine would also pop up after some else and get looked by sheer chance of how youtube was viewed NOT knowing there was a choice. Thanks again
Thanks Brad, great tip as usual. I am going to head over to youtube right now and change mine.
brad - this is an excellent post and I appreciate the information. I have bookmarked this and reaaly do need to use more video. Thanks.
Brad...
Thanks for the call but I figured it out. It was a HE (human error). I use AVG, which of course, comes with the ability to accept or deny cookies. Now that I have figured out the problem I need to clear all the blocked cookies and third party trackers from FireFox and then go to UTube, sign on and allow them to dump a bunch of crap on my pc. Maybe I'll feel like doing all of that later. Just goes to show ya, nothing but nothing is really FREE :)
TLW...ROAR!
Thank you for the update and the great information.
Thanks 4 the tips Brad! I always appreciate reading and learning new perspectives.
Brad, as usual you are a wealth of information. I've been to that section to change the colors and never noticed the blue gear. Thanks for taking the time & edjamicating us all!
Brad,
Thanks for the information. I especially found the embedded code information about other videos pop-ups helpful.
Thanks
Brad,
Those "related videos" were one complaint I've heard multiple times from people about YouTube. Now I'll know how to help them. Thanks!
Thank you, thank you! I just started to put my listings on, so now I now how to "protect" them.
You have heard it several times already but it can never be said enough... You have ONCE AGAIN provided us with some great material. Being a non YouTube user, I did not realize this was an option when creating your video. I'll be bookmarking this for future use. Thanks Brad.
HiBrad! I bookmarked this-I have not been successful at getting a youtube on any of my posts yet-but when I do I will need this blog post. Thanks!
Great advice, this is SO easy to miss, and most folks do not realize it is such an easy fix!
Thank you for sharing with everyone!
Have a Profitable Day!
- Harrison
Brad,
Simply fantastic tips - and explained very well from both a strategic and application side. Thanks. :)
Steve
Brad, thanks for the tip! As usual...you're appreciated!
That's friggin awesome!!! I was just thinking about those darn "related" videos yesterday and now I can do something about them. Very cool. Thanks
great tip. There is always something to learn. I think this will increase the number of plays. People will tend to watch a video a second time if there isn't another topic showing up. Good stuff.
Taught me something today... And I often do change the setting and guess I was too focused to notice that option...
Hi Brad - This is something I just recently discovered. The YouTube videos I have posted recently on my blog, website, etc., have all been posted with borders, resized, and don't take you to YouTube to be shown other videos. It is the best thing they have done to the site.
Thanks Brad - always looking for ways to perfect my videos and you always have great tips!!
I love it I love it I love it! Thanks Brad for another great freebie tip!
Mike - you'll need to add the Youtube HTML code using the HTML tab on your AR post. It looks like you embedded the code using the WYSIWYG tab. This will just end up showing the code and not the actual video. Let me know if that works for you.
Brad- I'm getting there. I'm editing in html now; here's the code.
<center><script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.nachi.tv/episode9.js"></script>
<br>View more episodes at <a href="http://www.nachi.tv">NACHI.TV</a>
<noscript>To view this <a href="http://www.nachi.tv">NACHI.TV</a> video you must have JavaScript enabled.</noscript></center>
When I save it, it ignores everything between the <script> and </script> tags. Any hints?
Mike - It looks like the video source you're using has code that is NOT compatible with AR. I see javascripts in it. This post is about Youtube, so I assumed you were asking aout youtube. I have never heard of NACHI.TV, try youtube, you'll have way better results.
Brad- that was my initial guess, that AR doesn't allow js. Wordpress doesn't either. My first comment asked about videos outside of youtube, but I worded it incorrectly. Thanks for the info, though! Hopefully AR will allow js in the future.
Wow! This is great. I recently uploaded a video of the HUD home and didn't notice the advanced setting options. I should search to see if there is one before I comment, but it'd be great to read a follow up post of how to best promote videos on YouTube. Thanks!
The size options I'm given in my YouTube video are 320x265 425x344 480x385 640x505. Is there a way to customize the sizes as recommended for AR?
Nishika - Yes. There is. When you embed the code into your blog post, you can change the width and height in the embed code to be whatever size you choose. Great question, thanks for asking.
Another thing you may want to think about using is different video host. You tube is great, and all video should still go there. BUT you may want top check out WellcomeMat. They are kind if a YouTube for real estate. Their free service gives you all the tools that YouTube does, but they also offer real estate specific tools like an MLS approved player, simple Craigslist Ad creator for the video, as well as a variety of widgets for your website (some of these tools are part of the paid services).
Check them out, and when you do, be sure to connect to me at OpenHouseHD in Utah!
Ray - here's a video comparison of some of the more popular video hosting sites out there, it's an old post but it's a cpomparison just the same. WellcomeMat is a great source and product and there are others to be considered as well.
http://activerain.com/blogsview/521488/Real-Estate-Video-Hosting
Whats sad (or exciting, I guess) is the rapid rate of changes.
In the uear since that post, YouTube has improved quality
Google Video has gome away
Vimeo has made it clear they want us to go away (real estate that is)
WellcomeMat has greatly improved video quality, load time and added new tools
Viddler has improved quality
Ray - so true, the one thing that's always for sure and unstoppable, and that is change. :-)
Is YouTube the only way to post videos on a standard Active Rain blog, or can videos be posted directly?
Thanks,
Dianne
Dianne - you can host any video on ActiveRain as long as the site where you post it has the ability to use HTML embed codes. You can't place a video on AR unless it is sitting on an outside server or site somewhere. Sites like WellcomeMat, Vimeo, Viddler, Zipvo, Google Video and Youtube all offer the embed codes once you upload your video to their sites. There are many other hosting sites as well, the only other option is to host your video on your own server and then create a video player to show it on your AR Blog post. Let me know if you need any help with this. :-)
Thanks Active Brad! I'm anxiously waiting for the arrival of my new FLIP UltraHD. Lost the old one within a week! So I'm a real newbie looking for all the tips I can find. This is a gem!
Vickie - looking forward to seeing what you post with your flip ultra HD. Wish I had one of those. You think if I lose mine, that Jon might let me get one of those? lol~ Let me know when you post your first videos, can't wait to see them. Thanks. :-)
Brad, Thanks for the tip. I was wondering why some my video embeds had other videos after and some did not!
Love this tip! Thanks for sharing!
I have a buddy that is way ahead of me whenit comes to internet marketing. I saw one of his youtube videos and it ended with similar videos. I was able to teach him how to correct it and he was stunned. It was nice to be able to teach the teacher. Thanks for the great info.
Rick - that always feels good doesn't it? lol~ :-))
Brad - This is an incredibly useful tip! I've always wondered how to keep those "related videos" from popping up at the end of an embedded video. Thanks so much for sharing this.
Hi Brad thank for the tip I did not see the blue thing a ma jig
I'll keep trying but I may give you a call it thats ok. I just started using you tube and could use all the help I can get thanks.
John - this post was put up a while ago, Youtube has changed the placement of many of their oprions and added a ton of new ones. Come join the free Youtube Webinar I do over at Zillow Academy.com, I just did one today. You'll get a ton of practical and realistic tools and ideas you can implement immediately after the webinar. Thanks for commenting and stopping by, you're always welcomed.
Hope to see you at the Academy sometime. :-)
